Khartoum, Oct. 4 (SUNA) – The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources inaugurated on Monday the first national strategy for water in Sudan, in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, and a number of ministers and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Sudan.

The Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Prof. Yasser Abbas, said that the ministry is working in cooperation with its partners to meet the needs of the citizens and designing appropriate policies to enable investment in the institutions and infrastructure and to mobilize energies as an added value to provide a service that benefits everyone.

He said that achieving the maximum benefit of the water sector represents a major challenge that requires confrontation of the challenges and achieving victory through a sound vision, planning and joint commitments to achieve the goals of eradicating hunger and poverty, enhancing food security, creating job opportunities that preserve human dignity and achieving peace and development.

Prof. Abbas pointed out that moving the strategy from the stage of vision to the stage of the decade-long era through transformational plans to enhance the water sector in Sudan aims to improve the water management system and to provide it with the necessary equipment and capabilities to ensure equitable distribution, and to improve the standard of living of Sudanese in the rural and urban areas and herdsmen in obtaining safe drinking water, as well as providing Food security for about seven million Sudanese working in the field of agriculture and pastoralism, and the creation of job opportunities for about wo million people, especially the youth and women.
